Calling All High School Juniors: Experience Washington, D.C. with MEC & U.S. Co-ops
As the 2025 through 2026 school year kicks off, Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) is thrilled to once again sponsor the Washington, D.C. Youth Tour, a life-changing experience designed for high school juniors whose parents or guardians are MEC members. Selected students will join peers from across the country for a week-long, all-expenses-paid adventure to our nation’s capital during Summer 2026. Applications open September 1 and close October 31.
This unforgettable trip offers students the opportunity to explore national landmarks, meet with lawmakers, and gain a deeper understanding of American history and government, all while building lifelong friendships. More than a sightseeing tour, this journey inspires leadership, civic engagement, and personal growth.
Funded entirely through assigned capital credits, the tour is provided at no cost to MEC members. “Washington Youth Tour is more than just a trip; it’s an investment in the future of our communities,” said Tyler Carlson, MEC CEO. “We believe that by exposing students to the broader world of government, leadership, and cooperation, we help plant the seeds for tomorrow’s changemakers.”
MEC’s commitment to Education, Training, and Information, 1 of the 7 Cooperative Principles, is demonstrated through this initiative. By supporting programs like the Washington Youth Tour, MEC empowers future leaders and strengthens community ties.
Gianna Pasquale, MEC project accountant and 1 of the 2025 tour chaperones, shared her thoughts on the experience, “Watching the students grow throughout the week was an incredible experience. They had begun as curious teenagers and returned as confident young leaders with a new appreciation for public service, knowledge, and the power of community. I felt privileged to see that transformation.”
Students are selected through a competitive process that includes an essay and an in-person presentation before a panel of judges. To apply, students must be high school juniors and have parental or guardian consent.
