Lineman Appreciation Day – April 18

Lineworkers are responsible for keeping the lights on by weathering the toughest and darkest days regardless of conditions. Without our lineworkers, sustaining everyday life would leave our members in the dark, quite literally. We are celebrating our lineworkers at Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) for their crucial role in all our lives. No matter what time of day, weather, or potential conditions, our lineworkers will deliver electricity to the community.

Lineworkers install, repair, and maintain medium and high-voltage power lines and electrical cables that supply electricity to residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural members. Lineworkers ensure that our members have access to electricity day and night regardless of excessive heat, extreme wind, snow in the mountains, and flash floods. They must climb up poles ranging anywhere from 30 to 120 feet tall. There are homes, businesses, and other public infrastructure that depend on MEC lineworkers to deliver reliable electricity, especially in times of crisis.

Construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical power lines consist of installing and repairing transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and stringing connecting wires for a steady flow of electricity. Our lineworkers have a full understanding of electrical theory, advanced technical skills, and knowledge of mandatory safety procedures. Here at MEC, our lineworkers make it look effortless, have a great attitude, and take pride in the work that they accomplish.

It is no easy feat to become a lineworker either. The commitment is vigorous. Over 8,000 hours in a four-year period of training and hands-on learning are required to earn the title of journeyman lineman. This nature of work asks our lineworkers to remain dedicated as there is no room for error when working in dangerous weather conditions. The potential exposure to highvoltage electricity and fall risks make being a lineworker dangerous with the utmost importance on safety and following step-by-step protocols. At MEC we have 11 journeyman lineworkers that must maintain over 1,577 miles of power lines across areas of 3 counties and 45,044 meters.

Lineman Appreciation Day is April 18, and a well-deserved celebration of the dedication lineworkers commit every day at work.
